I am tenured Professor (Associate) in Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford. I have a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto (2007) and an MA in European Studies from K.U.Leuven (1999). I was a research fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (2000), Assistant Professor at McMaster University (2006-2008), Post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Ethics at the University of Toronto (2008-2010), Visiting Scholar at the Australian Defense Force Academy (2012) and China Foreign Affairs University (2016).
My general research interests lie at the intersection of diplomatic studies, negotiation theory, international ethics, and crisis management. I have recently co-edited a volume on “Digital Diplomacy: Theory and Practice” (with Marcus Holmes, 2015) and one on “Secret Diplomacy: Concepts, Contexts and Cases” (with Stuart Murray, 2016). A more detailed list of my publications can be found here.
At Oxford, I have been teaching courses on International Diplomacy, Public Diplomacy, Diplomacy & International Law, Climate Change Diplomacy, and Diplomatic Management of International Crisis. I convene seminars, lectures and training on digital diplomacy (strategy and impact assessment), international negotiations (theory and practice) and crisis management (simulation exercises).
Oxford Digital Diplomacy Research Group
Together with my doctoral students, I established the Oxford Digital Diplomacy Research Group (DigDiploRox) in 2016 as an academic collaborative project aiming to further the study and practice of digital diplomacy. The group holds regular talks, workshops and public events with members of the diplomatic community in London and Europe. Check out the list of forthcoming events, publications and media interviews here. If you are interested in scheduling an event, public lecture or media interview, please send me an email .
